RESOURCESHuman trafficking is a system of oppression that exploits 24.9 million adults and children of all nationalities, races, and gender identities all across the world.
The perpetrators of this exploitation are known as traffickers and those that they hold power over are known as victims of human trafficking. Traffickers take away a victims’ choice through the use of force, fraud, threat of force, and coercion that leave victims feeling powerless in their situation. While physical restraints are used, victims are more often compelled into this life through the use of fraud and coercion. They are left feeling they have no other choice. Human trafficking is commonly considered to be either sex trafficking or labor trafficking, but trafficking can present itself in various forms. Victims of human trafficking can sometimes experience both of these types of trafficking at the same time as well.
Sex trafficking is “the crime of using force, fraud or coercion to induce another individual to perform commercial sex. Common types include escort services, pornography, illicit massage businesses, brothels, outdoor solicitation”. Under United States law, any minor under the age of 18 engaged in commercial sex acts is automatically considered a victim of sex trafficking.
Labor trafficking is “the crime of using force, fraud or coercion to induce another individual to work or provide service. Common types include agriculture, domestic work, restaurants, cleaning services, and carnivals”. Victims of labor trafficking are often paid very little and have their basic human rights denied to them.
